Joining the school is simpler than you think.

We accept applications all year round, but we encourage Grade R and Grade 1 families to apply between July and September the year before. As a no-fee Section 21 school, our admissions are guided by the Department of Basic Education’s Admissions Policy.

Grade R & Grade 1 admissions

Annual intake — around 38 learners per Grade. Priority is given to children whose home is in Mosate Section, Makapanstad and surrounding farms within a 6 km radius.

Eligibility — for Grade R, learners must turn 5 by 30 June of the school year. For Grade 1, they must turn 6 by 30 June.

Documents required:

  • Original birth certificate & one certified copy
  • Immunisation card (Road to Health booklet)
  • Parent / guardian South African ID or passport
  • Proof of residence (utility bill, lease, or affidavit from ward councillor)
  • Most recent school report, if transferring

Interview process — a relaxed family conversation with the principal (about 30 minutes), and a short play-and-listen activity for the child. This is not an exam — there is nothing for your child to “pass.”

Notification — we phone successful families within 14 working days of the interview. A waiting list is kept for any class that fills up.

Transfers & in-year admissions

We accept transfers into Grade 2 to Grade 7 throughout the year, subject to space in the class. The process: phone the office, bring the child’s previous school report and transfer letter, complete the SA-SAMS forms with the admin clerk, and meet the class teacher.

School fees

Makapanstad Primary School is registered with the Department of Basic Education as a Quintile 1 No-Fee School. There are no compulsory school fees.

Voluntary contributions for the SGB (used for excursion subsidies and choir uniforms) are R150 per learner per year, payable in cash or EFT and entirely optional. No learner is excluded from any school activity for non-payment.

Stationery and uniform costs vary; please ask the office for the suggested basic list — typically about R450 per child for the year.

Frequently asked questions.

If your question isn’t here, phone us on 079 205 0674 — Mma Mogale answers Monday to Friday from 07:30.

For Grade R and Grade 1, the main window is 1 July – 30 October each year. Transfers into other grades are accepted throughout the year, subject to space.
There are no school fees. We are a Quintile 1 no-fee school registered with the DBE. The voluntary SGB contribution is R150/year and is entirely optional. The DBE Pro Bono Schoolwear scheme can help families who cannot afford a uniform; ask Mrs Lefifi privately.
Every learner is fed under the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP). The menu rotates through pap and morogo, samp and beans, rice and chicken stew, and includes a piece of fruit. Two food handlers cook on site each day.
For learners on surrounding farms we coordinate with two licensed scholar-transport operators. The North West DoE Learner Transport Programme covers eligible learners who live more than 5 km away. Ask the office for current routes.
We have 8 educators for 255 learners across 8 classes (Grade R to Grade 7). The average class is about 32 learners — small for a township public school. Foundation Phase classes are kept the smallest.
Our LOLT is Setswana from Grade R to Grade 3, with daily English First Additional Language periods. From Grade 4 the LOLT becomes English. Our Languages Lead, Mr Mahlangu, runs after-school English Drama for learners who need extra confidence with the language.
Foundation Phase: 15–20 minutes a day, mostly reading. Intermediate Phase: 30–45 minutes. Senior Phase (Grade 7): up to an hour, including project work. We are realistic — most homes have one shared table.
Optional aftercare runs from 14:30 to 17:30 on weekdays during school terms. It is supervised by Ms Naidoo and a rotating senior educator. There is no fee, but space is limited and works on a sign-up basis each term.
Phone the office to check space, bring the child’s most recent school report and a transfer letter from the previous school, then meet the principal. We complete the SA-SAMS transfer-in within five working days.
We are an Ordinary School, but we work hard within our means. Ms Naidoo (Learner Support Educator) runs small-group support and partners with the District-Based Support Team for assessments. Significant needs may benefit from one of the district’s Full-Service or Special Schools, and we will help you with that referral if it is right for your child.
